Olha Tkachenko's installation Leleka will be featured in the western entrance lobby of 401 Richmond Street during Nuit Blanche Toronto 2024, from 7pm on Saturday, October 5th until the following morning. All are invited to visit the artwork during the event.
"The sculpture "Leleka" symbolizes migrants on the road of connecting their motherlands in the past and a new home in the future. “Leleka” ("stork" in Ukrainian) is one of the symbolic birds in Eastern Europe. This migration bird represents loyalty to home and family and brings blessing and good luck to those whose roof is chosen by the bird for nesting.
It is a figure of a large stork made with papier mache. Many ancient Ukrainian symbols cover the stork's body: symbols of good luck, courage, wisdom, grip, protection from evil, triumph over problems, and others. An explanation of the symbols is provided in the description of the installation. Together with other symbolic elements, these will inspire visitors' curiosity to explore the visual messages of the installation. The light emitting through the bird's chest and the folklore music, accompanying the installation, will remind the feelings, hope, and tears, that every pilgrim experiences on the way to a new land.
"Leleka" calls to bless, comfort, and encourage migrants and those who support them on this hard way." - Olha Tkachenko
